 Theresa Lloyd – biography

Following a 15-year career in international finance, in 1986 Theresa Lloyd set up the corporate fundraising division of Save the Children, the first and still one of the most successful such initiatives, developing the concepts of cause-related marketing and corporate social responsibility which have become part of the business landscape. In 1990 she became the UK Director of ActionAid, the overseas development charity, whose annual income grew from under £16m in 1990 to £37m in 1994/5. She launched and was President of Azione Aiuto, the now very successful Italian affiliate, and devised and set up the ActionAid India Corporate Partnership, now also thriving and closely linked to the Prince of Wales Business Leaders Forum. It was the blueprint for the World Bank Business Partners for Development scheme.

For the past 12 years Theresa Lloyd has been a leading adviser on strategic planning, corporate governance and fundraising to non-profit organisations, in the cultural, education, health and social welfare sectors. A key element has been advice on the feasibility and implementation of capital and endowment funding, and major donor development, with clients ranging from start-up projects to major national institutions. She also advises individual major donors on the development of a strategy for their philanthropy. She was the Founder Director of Philanthropy UK, a 3-year project established in 2001 by the Association of Charitable Foundations to promote new philanthropy among those of substantial means. The brief included research, publications, technical advice, workshops and collaboration with a wide network within the voluntary sector.

Theresa Lloyd is the author of A Guide to Giving, awarded the Plain English Campaign Crystal Mark, which was published in 2003 and provided the first comprehensive and independent advice on the development of strategies and the available mechanisms and tax reliefs for individual donors. The second edition, sponsored by Coutts, was published in late 2005. In 2004 she wrote Why Rich People Give; based on 100 in-depth interviews, this is the first major British study into the wealthy and their giving patterns, experiences and expectations. Her latest book, Cultural Giving, published in October 2006, is the first guide in the UK to focus on individual giving for the arts and heritage and is aimed as much at trustees and chief executives as the fundraising staff of cultural organisations. Theresa Lloyd contributed to the Goodison Review on gifts of works of art and was a member of the expert panel of the National Audit Office report on Income generated by the Museums and Galleries.

Theresa is a regular speaker at conferences such as the annual Institute of Fundraising Convention, and at specialist private sector seminars relating to wealth management and philanthropy.

Theresa Lloyd has been a trustee of several organisations, including Sadler’s Wells and CARE International UK, and is currently a Board Member of The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign, The Young Vic, and The European Association of Planned Giving and a member of the Council of Bath University. She is also a member of the Business Advisory Group of Comic Relief, the Development Board of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Advisory Boards of Philanthropy UK and the 21st Century Trust.

Theresa Lloyd has been a member of the Institute of Fundraising since 1987, and is a member of EU Consult, The European Association of Consultants to Not-for-Profit Organisations. Theresa has also been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts since 1988.
