Advice to Board and early stage preparation for major capital campaign 2007-08
Theresa was approached to advise the Integrated Health Trust at the very early stages of their plans to create a purpose-designed integrated health centre on a green-field site in the West country. A priority was to ensure that the embryonic board and project director understood the essential components for the development of strong governance, a robust business plan and the other requirements necessary to underpin the fundraising for a multi-million capital campaign. Theresa provided mentoring support as the planning developed. This culminated in an extended Board seminar outlining the components of strategic planning and the success factors and investment required for such a major project.
"We would all like to thank you very much indeed for your skilled presentation to the Board. I think that you achieved your aim of making us fully aware of the breadth and commitment of the undertaking being contemplated by the Trust. It was certainly the catalyst for some very serious thinking and I will keep you informed of developments.... It is very rare to find such a fine combination of talents in one person."
Dr Rosy Daniel, Integrated Health Trust
Since 2005 Theresa has been providing support at Board, senior management, Director of Fundraising and Head of Major Donor levels in the development of a major donor strategy. Work has included seminars for trustees and senior staff, advice on the design and implementation of specific programmes of engagement, seminars for the regional staff team concerned with major donors, the development and refinement of planning papers and the mentoring of key staff.
“Theresa came to help us drive forward an emergent mid and high level donor giving programme. Every charity thinks it is different, but The National Trust certainly feels it has a separate identity and personality. Theresa worked with the team, endorsing and supporting them, and giving confidence to what they were already doing. But crucially, she also inspired them to reach higher and aim for a much more stretching programme. There were cautions within the Fundraising Department and beyond it, but Theresa sensed this and worked well with the colleagues who were involved at the fringes. And then when our Head of Major Gifts left, Theresa steered me through the decisions and interim steps until I could secure a replacement. Because of the high regard with which we hold Theresa, and her detailed knowledge and understanding of our work, I have asked her to work with the new Head of Major Gifts and I can already see that emerging as a productive relationship.”

Development of fundraising vision and goals, 2006-07
Theresa Lloyd was invited to respond to an invitation to put forward a proposal for the provision of advice for the development of a strategy to fund a major development involving the Charity, the Hospital and the medical School of King's College, London . She decided to invite an Associate, Caroline Underwood, to participate in the proposal. As was announced internally, "Together, the Trust and Charity have engaged Theresa Lloyd Associates working with Caroline Underwood to advise us on the path we need to follow to achieve significant philanthropic support for this vision of a world class academic medical centre with a focus on cancer care." The project would require an investment of the order of £250m and it was recognised that there would need to be a major adaptation of corporate culture to develop the potential of major private philanthropy within the NHS sector. The work involved interviewing a number of key trustees, senior staff, medical and academic specialists, and the development of a detailed strategy and recommendations.
"An excellent report - clear, concise but comprehensive, calculated to leave the reader with a sense of urgency. Appendices 5-9 are worth their weight in gold."
Tim Higginson, Director of Strategy, Guy's and St Thomas' Foundation Trust
Advice on all aspects of organisational development and campaign strategy for an organisation new to fundraising 2006 -07
“Before his death Christopher Lloyd ensured that the house and garden he had so carefully nurtured at Great Dixter would be transferred to a charitable trust. After he died in 2006 the trustees were faced with the challenge of acquiring the share of the property which had not been owned by Christopher, and of investing in upgrading the facilities so that the experience of visitors, trainees and students of all ages matched their expectations and reflected the outstanding values and creativity of the garden itself. We knew that the cost of all this might amount to several million pounds. Even though we understood that we might be in a position to apply to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a part of this, we realised that with no experience of fundraising we needed help with developing a strategy, including the assessment of the potential of private funding, how we should present our case and what resources and expertise we should need.
We were delighted that a major trust identified Theresa as the person best suited to help us and agreed to fund the work of Theresa Lloyd and her associate Janet Reeve. Theresa and Janet took us through the building blocks of the elements of a successful capital campaign, and Theresa introduced another associate, Magnus von Wistinghausen, to provide preliminary advice on the business planning and other components of applying for an HLF grant. In due course we agreed that we needed a full-time campaign director, and Theresa provided the job description and person specification, and helped with the recruitment process. We are very pleased that Justine Webb is now developing and implementing the strategy initiated by Theresa and Janet.
Theresa and her associates showed a real enthusiasm for and commitment to Great Dixter. They were very excited by the opportunities and always sensitive to our values and concern to respect the spirit of place and the inheritance of Christopher Lloyd. We are confident that following their involvement at the crucial planning stage we are very well placed to achieve our goals and build on the tremendous legacy of Great Dixter.”
6 months later
“As Justine nears the end of six months with Great Dixter, it reminds me that I should write and thank you again for your help with the Campaign. Your generosity with your time and expertise has proved essential and your thought-provoking guidance on all aspects of the new organisation has been key in the development of our thinking and planning. I must thank you too for introducing us to Sandra Hepburn, who has now met the Trustees and been warmly adopted as Campaign Chair.”

Feasibility study and subsequent support for capital campaign, 2006-07
Theresa Lloyd, working with Janet Reeve, was engaged at the end of 2005 to undertake a Feasibility Study for the next stages of the Institute’s capital fundraising plans. These involved seeking funds from the private sector and an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund. In particular the Institute was looking for suggestions about how best to present the case for support, some idea of how it was perceived in the marketplace and likely sources and levels of funding. Following the presentation of the report and recommendations to the Board, further work was undertaken, including the provision of ongoing advice to the Chief Executive and senior management team and help with the job description and recruitment of an interim Director of Development. In due course it was agreed to create a permanent position, and support was given to the process of engaging a full-time Director of Development who will manage the campaign. He is now in post. Theresa and Janet continue to be involved with the provision of advice on an ad hoc basis.
"Theresa and Janet were superb. Their enthusiasm and commitment to the task, combined with their experience, contributed to a very valuable result. Also, they did not flinch from explaining the full implications of their research to my board even when it was directly critical. Invaluable!"

Jewish Culture UK
Feasibility study to increase funding opportunities, 2005-06
Theresa was commissioned by a major trust to explore the options for and potential from a collaborative approach to the solicitation of funds by a wide range of cultural organisations with a focus on Jewish arts and heritage. Realising that the work would involve a mapping exercise, questionnaire design and options analysis, as well as confidential meetings with current and potential donors, within a demanding time frame, she involved Associates Magnus von Wistinghausen and, for the research questionnaire design and analysis, Susan Mackenzie, who is now the Director of Philanthropy UK.
“Theresa Lloyd was engaged by a group of Jewish Culture providers to investigate the question of increased funding for Jewish Culture. The project involved mapping of existing resources as well as a series of confidential interviews with a variety of donors in the sector. Working with two excellent associates, she and her team showed a complete grasp of the brief and dealt expertly with both the providers and potential funding sources. Theresa Lloyd and her team presented (both in person and in a clear document) an extremely helpful report. This project was delivered within the timescale envisaged and the budget assigned and their professionalism and competence made them a pleasure to work with.”

Development of strategic framework for major (£200m plus) capital and endowment campaign
In 2005 KCL completed a successful campaign, raising £44m for capital and endowment. In June Theresa was approached to provide guidance on the level at which to set the target for the next stages of the plans for capital fundraising, suggestions about how best to present the case for support, the identification of potential sources of funding outside the traditional areas with a focus on alumni and others with existing links to KCL, and some idea of how KCL was perceived in the broader marketplace.
The proposed target level was £200m, to include significant endowment. As well as internal academic leaders and influential alumni, interviewees included key players and opinion-formers in London, such as leaders in the financial services sector, property developers and chief executives in leading companies with a focus on research and development. The detailed report produced in November 2005 gave a full and frank picture of the opportunities and challenges facing KCL, and provided very clear guidance as to the next steps to be taken in such areas as reputation, leadership, development investment, commercial exploitation and, crucially, the achievement of a corporate culture essential for success.
