 Why come to us?
Expertise and reputation

Theresa Lloyd is recognised as one of the leading advisers on fundraising in the country.

Over 9 years as a senior manager responsible for fundraising and communications are complemented by 12 years as a senior consultant whose practice has grown purely by recommendation.

She has also served on boards for over 20 years, and is currently a Trustee of 2 organisations with significant fundraising programmes: the Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign and the Young Vic. She is also a member of the Development Council of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

The combination of hands-on senior fundraising responsibility, a consultancy practice with a wide range of organisations in several sectors, and volunteer leadership experience has given Theresa a uniquely comprehensive perspective and understanding of the challenges of the non-profit sector.

Theresa Lloyd's experience has equipped her particularly well to offer:

  • the creation of a practical strategy and policy planning base for non-profit organisations, focusing on achievable goals and measures of progress
  • the creation of an agreed framework for decisions on the allocation of scarce resources, in the context of an agreed strategic plan, in circumstances where the measures are as much or more qualitative and values-driven as quantitative
  • the development of effective strategies for a range of fundraising challenges, with a key expertise in capital and endowment campaigns, and major donor development
  • support to senior management and trustees to understand and address the tensions which can develop between volunteer and paid staff, to clarify their respective roles and limits of authority, and to contribute effectively to the fundraising effort
Experience in several sectors

The main principles of successful fundraising are applicable across the whole range of sectors and causes. As can be seen from her client list, Theresa has advised organisations in the fields of international development, social welfare, the arts and heritage, health and higher education.

In recent years the cultural sector, higher education and health have formed the major component of her client base. In 2006 she published Cultural Giving.

Cultural Giving is the first guide in the UK to focus on individual giving for the arts and heritage. It uses a case study format to illustrate how the techniques described have worked for a range of different organisations, and there are contributions from a number of leading experts. The book gives plenty of realistic models to follow, and is aimed as much at trustees and chief executives as the fundraising staff of cultural organisations, although many of the issues and solutions could be applied to charities across all sectors.

The book includes a section on the tax implications of various fundraising activities, Theresa is also an expert on tax-efficient giving from the donor perspective and was the author of the first edition of A Guide to Giving.

Understanding the donor perspective

Theresa has continuing links with major donors and grant-making trusts. In particular Theresa is recognised as a leading expert in the field of major-donor philanthropy. She was the Founder Director of Philanthropy UK and is the author of Why Rich People Give (2004). Based on 100 in-depth confidential and wide-ranging interviews, this was the first and so far the only major British study into the wealthy and their giving patterns, experiences and expectations. Not only has this provided a source of information available to all; the insights gained during the many months of interviews with wealthy people have giving her a unique understanding of the perspective of major donors, and what they seek in their relationships with the organisations they wish to support.

Theresa also has in-depth experience with the corporate sector. In 1986 Theresa was recruited from the City to Save the Children to set up one of the first, and still one of the most successful, Corporate fundraising teams. With a marketing and banking background she was able to develop and promote a unique corporate membership scheme. She maintains continuing links to and understanding of the changing focus of corporate supporters of the non-profit sector through her roles as adviser and trustee.

Working with others

A fundamental principle of the way that we operate is one of transparency, partnership and collaboration. With over 20 years in the non-profit sector Theresa has extensive networks, and her continuing involvement as a Trustee of the European Association of Planned Giving, a member of the Advisory Board of Philanthropy UK, and participation in conferences and seminars, including those of Arts and Business and the Institute of Fundraising, means that she is up-to-date with developments in the sector. When appropriate she introduces other consultants and willingly shares her ideas and expertise.
